Rethinking Qualitative Research Masterclass

With Professor David Silverman

5-6th March 2024 (10.00-12.30 both days) – online via Zoom

7th March 2024 (10.00-12.30) – selected one-to-ones, online via Zoom

Summary

Qualitative researchers often try to do the same as quantitative research but with smaller samples. This interactive master-class is relevant to PhD students and early career researchers and more experienced researchers who want to do qualitative research and to write it up rigorously and effectively. It offers lectures and data workshops covering the latest approaches to key areas of qualitative research.

The workshop will consist of 2.5 hours of lectures, a student workshop, a feedback session and one-to-one supervisions for all students. The topics covered are:

  • Analysing documents and digital data [why these are readily available primary data; the range of research strategies to analyse such rich data]
  • Mixed methods research [the disadvantages of using multiple qualitative methods; the most useful sequence to work with both qualitative and quantitative data]

Schedule

The course will be taught over three consecutive mornings with the following timetable:

Tuesday March 5

10.00 Introductory lecture: What counts as qualitative research

10.45 Lecture 1 Analysing documents and digital data
