CYGNA North/NARTI In-Person Development Event
Navigating Academic Identity and Community: Perspectives and Practices
Friday 23rd January 2026
Northumbria University (room tbc)
Objective of the event:
Dominant discourses, whether within academia or beyond, often predominantly focus on the struggles and challenges that women face, which sometimes obscure their resilience, perseverance and success as well as celebrating them. This event shifts that lens. It centres women in higher education who have pushed through gender and intersectional imbalances at multiple levels not to survive but to thrive. Their stories of both struggles and successes alike deserve to be seen and celebrated. The event aims to:
– Celebrate women’s stories in higher education: Highlight the hurdles and achievements, recognising women’s contributions, failures, and victories, both big and small.
– Re-imagine opportunities: Open up conversations about the opportunities available to women in academia and how these can be reshaped and redefined to better reflect individual needs and ambitions.
– Collaborative learning: Share good practices and initiatives led or experienced by women, creating a supportive and empowering space for colleagues to learn from one another.
– Create a visual representation: Use art as an alternative and creative form of self-expression, inviting participants to creatively portray their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities they encounter through various artistic representation.
Our audience:
The event is open to all colleagues in higher education, across different genders, academics and professional staff, across all career levels. Register using the link above. Please note this event is in-person only and will not be delivered as hybrid or recorded.

| Women in academia: creating opportunities
Speaker: Dr Ana Laura Zavala Guillen, Chair of Northumbria Women’s Network It is an opportunity to celebrate women’s successes and reflect on the opportunities they create for one another. The aim of this talk is to inspire participants to raise their voices, share their stories and imagine a future where women in academia can thrive, innovate and break down barriers. This will be followed by a group discussion to reflect on the following questions: – Are there opportunities for women in academia? – What are these opportunities and are they accessible to everyone? – What initiatives exist to create more opportunities for women staff in academia? – How can we transform the challenges women face into opportunities for growth and empowerment? |
| Opening doors and navigating ladders
Speaker: Dr Amal Abdellatif In this session, Amal shares her lived experience as an academic and a woman of colour in academia. Whether representing barriers to overcome or the kind of support that have helped them along the way, the use of LEGO will enable participants to physically build a representation of their ideas and experiences. Participants will also use drawing, poetry, writing inspirational/motivational thoughts as artistic representations of their experiences as women in academia. They can share their personal challenges, triumphs or the opportunities they have encountered, as well as their vision for a future in which women have more equitable and inclusive access to success in academia. A variety of drawing materials (markers, crayons, pencils, etc.) will be provided to allow for different levels of artistic expression. |
| Chat and Create: Final reflections.
By Facilitators At the end of the event, participants will have the opportunity to share their artwork and LEGO creations with the group. Participants’ consent obtained before the session to take picture of their work. |
