Generating Ideas for Scholarly Research and Avoiding Common Pitfalls when Publishing in Top Journals with Prof. V Kumar

This one-day workshop will focus on two aspects related to publishing.  The first part of the discussion will focus on the process of generating ideas that has the potential to result in a scholarly publication. The second part will focus on how to avoid some of the common mistakes that authors make when crafting a manuscript, and subsequently, when revising the manuscript. Specifically, the topics covered include the following: (1) Where to get the Ideas; (2) How to achieve both Rigor and Relevance; (3), How to get Firms’ cooperation, if needed; (4) Identifying and Solving Key Business Challenges; (5) Speaking in Managers’ Tongue; and (6) Understanding the process of the publications journey. Under each topic, several of our research studies will be discussed some of which are recently published, and some are forthcoming.

V. Kumar (VK) is the Distinguished Term Professor, and Senior Fellow, at Indian School of Business, India; HUL Distinguished Visiting Chair Professor, IIM Ahmedabad; Distinguished Fellow, MICA, India; and Distinguished Professor of Research, WE School, India. VK has also been honored as a Legend in Marketing through the Legends in Marketing series published by Sage Publications. Additional honors include being recognized as the Chang Jiang Scholar, HUST, China; Lee Kong Chian Fellow, Singapore Management University; and Fellow, Hagler Institute for Advanced Study, TAMU, College Station, Texas.  VK’s research focuses on rigor (developing new methods) and relevance (solving business problems).  He has published over 250 papers in scholarly journals, 25 books on various topics including Intelligent Marketing: Employing New Age Technologies, Marketing Research, International Marketing Research, Customer Relationship Management, Managing Customers for Profit, Profitable Customer Engagement, Essentials of Marketing Research, Statistical Methods in CRM, and Marketing Research: A Global Outlook.  Many of his books have been translated into multiple languages worldwide.

VK has received over 20 Lifetime Achievement Awards, and 25 Research and Teaching Excellence Awards.  VK also publishes regularly in Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, and Management Business Review to bring out the relevance of his work to the business world. VK has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Marketing (2014-2018). Finally, VK enjoys interacting with doctoral students and junior faculty as he feels he can learn a lot from them.
