This advanced-level workshop is targeted at doctoral students interested in mixed methods research strategy and have an idea of their doctoral thesis topic. The workshop is also open to early career researchers currently using mixed methods or planning to in the near future. The workshop will provide participants with a deeper understanding about mixed-methods research strategy, covering the philosophical underpinnings of the approach and its practical application in studies through to more advanced-level study.

Participants will have also familiarized themselves with some of the most classical and timely publications of key scholars. Additionally, they will also have gained knowledge in what kind of studies mixed methods research strategy is applicable and whether the approach would be beneficial and purposeful in their own research. Today’s business environment is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous and in order to create solutions to the grand challenges we face, mixed-methods studies are often called for. They provide a more accurate and in-depth understanding of the phenomena under investigation and offer a good platform for multidisciplinary research.

Programme

Day One (09.30-13.00) – Philosophical underpinnings of Mixed Methods research strategy

– introduction of research paradigms and their link to research strategy

– paradigm wars and the development of mixed-methods as an established research strategy

– methodological fit – when is mixed-method study appropriate

– different types of mixed-method research designs

 

Day Two (09.30-13.00) – Advances in Mixed Methods research strategy

– mixed-methods research process

– integration of qualitative and quantitative element

– evaluating mixed-methods research

– publishing mixed-methods research

As this is an advanced workshop, the participants are expected to be familiar with both quantitative and qualitative research methods (including data collection, data analysis & criteria for rigorous research).

Niina Nummela is Professor of International Business at the Turku School of Economics at the University of Turku, Finland and an EIBA Fellow. Her areas of expertise include international entrepreneurship, cross-border acquisitions, and research methods. She has published widely in academic journals and contributed to several internationally published books, also as an editor. She has also co-edited special issues for journals and has several years of editorial experience. In a recent bibliometric analysis, she was ranked among the 30 most impactful scholars in the field of International Entrepreneurship (Baier-Fuentes et al. 2019).
