HOW TO BUILD A SUCCESSFUL ACADEMIC CAREER AS A PHD RESEARCHER IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT

Thursday 12th – Friday 13th September 2024

Newcastle University Business School, Newcastle University, UK

Newcastle University Business School — supported by the Society for Advancement of Management Studies (SAMS) and in collaboration with NARTI — is holding a two-day event for business and management doctoral students on community-building and career development drawing on expert advice and interactive facilitation methods to explore:

  • What does it mean to be a successful doctoral student in business and management studies?
  • What does it mean to belong to the international business and management academic community?

Summary:

We will discuss what success means, explore the most common challenges on the way of building one’s academic identity, and co-create strategies for building a successful academic career. The event will provide the participants with opportunities for networking and developing their academic profile as business and management scholars. The programme involves two theatre-based workshops to facilitate experimental and creative exploration of themes related to academic success and career capital building strategies. In addition, it includes a keynote by Professor Stefanie Reissner (Durham University) and expert-led sessions offering practical advice and hands-on suggestions for the development of an academic profile through involvement in conventional and alternative communities of practice.

Organisers: Dr Sara Zaeemdar, Professor Susan Kirk, Professor David Lain, Dr Marti Lopez Andreu, Professor Tracy Scurry (Newcastle University Business School) and Ms Joanne Garrick (NARTI).
