Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) Using SmartPLS

Online self-managed course with concluding live webinars

Instructors: Professors Christian Ringle and Marko Sarstedt

mid-April to early-June 2025

Overview and aim:

PLS-SEM is a composite-based approach to SEM, which aims at maximizing the explained variance of dependent constructs in the path model. Researchers and practitioners use PLS-SEM especially when they conduct studies on success factors and the sources of competitive advantage.

This six-parts online course participants to the state-of-the-art of partial least squares structural equation modeling (e.g., Hair et al., 2022; Ringle et al., 2023; Sarstedt et al., 2021) using the SmartPLS software (Ringle et al., 2024). The first day of the course provides a profound introduction to PLS-SEM. Participants will learn the foundations of PLS-SEM and how to apply it by means of the SmartPLS software. The course continues with advanced topics including the importance-performance map analysis (IPMA), mediation, moderation, and higher-order models (e.g., Becker et al., 2023; Hair et al., 2024). At the end of the course, a live (online) wrap-up session includes case study exercises, questions and answers, and an outlook on additional advanced topics.

Please read the 2025 PLS-SEM_NARTI-1 (general description) course booklet carefully.

Who should register:

This online course has been designed for academic researchers and PhD/DBA doctoral students who are interested in learning how to design their research towards more rigorous and publishable outputs that potentially survive the test of time and are more frequently read and cited. A basic knowledge of univariate and multivariate statistics and SEM techniques is helpful, but not required.

Timeline and schedule:

1 April – deadline for registration of interest

8 April – confirmation of places

4 June – complete parts 1-5 of the course

11-12 June – live online sessions with instructors (1-2pm both days)

We have a limited number of places available on the self-managed course so only register your interest if you are able to fully commit to working through the course learning and exercises. If you would like to be considered for a place, please respond to this email by no later than Tuesday 1st April. Places will be confirmed by the 8th April. Please include the following with your response:

  • Confirmation that you will commit to undertaking the full course (accessing online lectures, presentations and completing exercises)
  • Confirmation that you will aim to attend the live online sessions with the instructors on the 11th and 12th June
  • Confirmation that if you are offered a place, you will contact Jo Garrick (in the first instance) if you are experiencing any issues with the course and require additional support

If you have any questions about the course, please ensure that you ask before you register your interest. If you have previously undertaken this course and would like to refresh your knowledge, you are welcome to register, although priority will be given to those who have not previously undertaken the course.
