Preparing for the VIVA workshop with Professor Rowena Murray
This online workshop covers definitions, purposes, criteria, examiners’ reports, roles and responsibilities, ‘originality’, outcomes and appeals. Two key topics we will look at in more depth are (1) the types of questions that regularly come up in PhD vivas and (2) strategies for answering them. This workshop will include short activities for practising these strategies and time to consider their relevance for different vivas. Finally, I will address participants’ questions about the viva during the workshop, and I will be available after the workshop to discuss by email/Skype any questions that are not answered during this workshop.

About Rowena
Rowena Murray graduated with MA (Hons) from Glasgow University and PhD (with Distinction) from Pennsylvania State University and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is Professor of Education, Director of Research, in the School of Education at the University of the West of Scotland and Adjunct Professor at Swinburne University, Melbourne. Her teaching and research focus on academic writing, the subject of her journal articles and books, including How to Write a Thesis, Writing for Academic Journals and The Handbook of Academic Writing (co-authored with Sarah Moore). Her research has been funded by Nuffield Foundation and British Academy.
